If you’ve ever driven a car before, then you know that just because someone is licensed to drive doesn’t mean that they know exactly what they’re doing behind the wheel.
The same goes for surgeons. While an M.D. is by no means easy to earn, it’s still only the minimum standard to practice medicine. When it comes to something as personal and important as plastic surgery, many patients want a stronger indication that their surgeon is qualified, competent, and capable of performing their procedure correctly.
That’s where board certification with the American Board of Plastic Surgery (the only plastic surgery certification recognized by the American government) comes in. Past licensure or certification with the ABPS requires:
-Graduation from an accredited medical school;
-Five years of residency training in an accredited program, with two years devoted entirely to plastic surgery;
-Completion of comprehensive written and oral exams.
While other certification boards exist, only the ABPS certifies for plastic surgery of the entire body. Because of this, an ABPS-certified surgeon is uniquely well-rounded yet still skilled in a variety of specialty procedures.
So if you’re considering plastic surgery, make sure to ask if your surgeon is board certified. Electing to undergo plastic surgery is too big of a decision to make without doing your research and finding a certified surgeon you can trust, like Dr. Anna Wooten.
