Dr. Anna Wooten has met women of all ages and walks of life that desire labiaplasty, a procedure to improve the look and feel of the labia, or folds of skin surrounding the vaginal opening. Although these women represent a diversity of demographics, they all have similar reasons for pursuing the procedure. Below, Dr. Wooten sheds light on some of the common reasons why women request labiaplasty.
Low Self-Esteem and Confidence
One of the biggest reasons why some women desire labiaplasty is that enlarged, long or asymmetrical labia cause them to have low self-esteem and confidence. Many of these women believe that they don’t look “normal” below the belt, which makes them feel very uncomfortable.
Defining what is and isn’t “normal” is very tricky. However, Dr. Wooten believes in helping women correct this issue if it affects their quality of life in a negative way. After surgery, she wants her patients to forget that this area was ever a problem and enjoy greater confidence and self-esteem.
Physical Discomfort
Another common reason why women request labiaplasty is that long or large labia can cause significant discomfort. For instance, the labial tissue can get stuck to the inner thighs when not held in place with undergarments; or, it may slip out of a thong or bathing suit. Some women find it excruciatingly painful to run, bike or exercise because of excess labial tissue. Wearing tight-fitting clothing like a bikini or yoga pants may be out of the question because it causes the labia to become irritated, chafed, tender or sore.
Labiaplasty involves trimming and lifting the labial tissue, which can dramatically improve personal comfort.
Insecurity Surrounding Intimacy
Many women with prominent or asymmetrical labia feel insecure around significant others or sexual partners because of the way their genitals look. They may not be able to relax and enjoy intimacy. The labia can also pull or tug during intercourse, causing physical discomfort.
Labiaplasty has helped many women enjoy greater intimacy.
