Common Questions about CoolSculpting

CoolSculpting is popular among both men and women who are bothered by stubborn pockets of fat, yet don’t want to undergo surgical treatment. The fat reduction treatment achieves noticeable results without the time or financial commitment required of surgery. It is very safe and precise, and does not involve incisions, injections, anesthesia or recovery downtime.

Because of the recent spike in CoolSculpting inquiries at her Pittsburgh plastic surgery practice, Dr. Anna Wooten thought it would be helpful to answer some of the most common questions about the procedure in a post.

How does CoolSculpting work?

CoolSculpting uses controlled cooling to selectively freeze fat cells, while leaving the surrounding tissue intact. In the weeks and months following treatment, the fat cells die and are filtered from the body through its natural processes.

What areas of the body can CoolSculpting treat?

CoolSculpting is often used to contour the:

  • Abdomen
  • Back
  • “Bra fat”
  • Upper arms
  • Inner and outer thighs
  • The “banana roll” under the buttocks
  • Area under the chin
  • Excess chest fat on men

Does CoolSculpting hurt?

No, treatment is not painful. You may feel a mild pinching, pulling or tugging sensation, or brief periods of intense cold at the treatment site. But you should not be in serious pain or discomfort. The only part that may be more uncomfortable is the two minute massage which is administered after the treatment.

How long is a CoolSculpting treatment session?

Total treatment time depends on the size and number of areas being treated in a session. Most treatment sessions last between 30 and 60 minutes.

Dr. Wooten has two CoolSculpting machines, which allows our nurses and laser technicians to complete treatment in half the time it would normally take (depending on the area treated).

How long do the results last?

Once the treated fat cells have been filtered from the body, they do not return. However, the remaining fat cells can enlarge if a patient gains weight. Our patients that maintain their weight with diet and exercise see the longest-lasting results.

What are some of the side effects of treatment?

CoolSculpting can cause temporary redness, swelling, bruising, tenderness, cramping or sensitivity at the treated site. However, these side effects are temporary and resolve quickly.

How much does CoolSculpting cost?

The cost of CoolSculpting depends on the specific treatment plan — specifically, the number of areas treated. Please book a consultation with our team to discuss your treatment needs and receive a personalized pricing quote.
