Before and After Photos

Breast Revision Consultation

Dr. Anna Wooten and the Beleza Plastic Surgery staff perform breast revision operations routinely, giving women a sense of relief and new confidence. Revision surgeries may involve replacing breast implants, revising scars, reshaping the breasts or a combination of these.

Dr. Wooten and the staff at Beleza Plastic Surgery understand that patients who have endured poor surgical results are likely to feel vulnerable or skeptical going into another surgery. And so, at Beleza, our goal is to promote an honest and open dialogue.

You should inform Dr. Wooten of all previous surgeries as well as any schedule of post operative medication. The more information we have about your previous breast augmentation, breast lift, or other surgeries, the better. It is important consider all variables to properly prepare for a successful breast revision. It is important consider all variables to properly prepare for a successful breast revision.

What are the Signs of a Bad Implant?

Capsular Contracture

Capsular contracture refers to the hardening of tissue surrounding your breast implant. It can occur around one or both implants and can be quite painful. The FDA points to 4 grades of capsular contracture, known as Baker Grades.

Rupture and Deflation

“Rupture” refers to a tear or hole in a silicone breast implant. When this occurs in a saline-filled breast implant, it is referred to as “deflation.” Saline saltwater solution leaks and is harmlessly absorbed into the body, leaving you implant shell to appear deflated. Because silicone is thicker than saline, following a rupture, the gel doesn’t leak from the shell as easily. Rather, it is likely to remain partially inside the implant shell and partially in the scar tissue that surrounding the implant (intracapsular rupture).

Does a Revision Lead to More Scarring?

Dr. Wooten explains why she recommends mesh for some women undergoing revisionary breast surgery to decrease risk of repeated capsular contracture.

Ideally, revisions will improve scarring, not worsen it. Dr. Wooten always waits before performing a revisionary surgery. The tissue needs to be healed from a primary surgery before further surgery is performed. Once the patient is ready for a revision, Dr Wooten is often able to excise existing scars and thereby remove old scar tissue. After surgery, Beleza offers laser scar therapies to improve the appearance and feel of incision lines as they heal.

In the case of patients who are experiencing a capsular contracture, Dr. Wooten will not only excise visible scar tissue, but much of internally formed scar tissue to soften the breast. Patients who have already experienced capsular contracture are at a higher risk of recurrence. Using mash scaffolding has shown promising results in minimizing reoccurrence of capsular contracture for patients undergoing secondary breast surgery.

For many breast revision cases, Dr. Wooten recommends the use of a supportive tissue scaffolding, called mesh, to reinforce the strength of the woman’s tissue. Dr. Wooten places mesh during the mommy makeover surgery, and the sterile medical device is absorbed into the patient’s own tissue during the year following surgery, thereby leaving behind a restrengthened collagen network. Dr. Wooten does this for many women who are having a breast lift or a breast reduction to ensure that they enjoy long-lasting results from their mommy makeover surgery at Beleza. The use of a mesh scaffolding means that it is less likely that patients’ tissues will re-sag and that they will want or need another lift in the future.

What Information Should I Retain From My Previous Surgery?

If you have been to another surgeon for your original procedure, and need to have a revision in Pittsburgh, we request that you have your implant cards. These are the cards you were given by your surgeon with your implant information on them. They come from the manufacturer of the implant and contain the most pertinent information — especially the serial numbers of the implants, what they are made of and what size they are. These are all crucial pieces of information for Dr. Wooten to know before going into surgery. Additionally, if there is any way for you to have your previous plastic surgeon’s office fax us their operative notes on you, that is also very helpful.
