LiposuctionPerformed in Pittsburgh by Dr. Wooten of Beleza Plastic Surgery
Liposuction, also known as lipoplasty, liposculpture, suction lipectomy, or just ‘lipo‘ is a cosmetic procedure that can sculpt the body by strategically removing excess fat. Almost any area can be targeted, though the most common are the hips, thighs & stomach.
Liposuction should be thought of as a contouring technique, not a weight loss method; the amount of fat removed is typically less than 10 pounds. Whether you don’t like your ‘love handles,’ or think you could use some shaping of the outer thighs, liposuction is an excellent way to subtly shape yourself a more flattering figure.
Before and After
Candidates for Liposuction
The best candidates for liposuction are those who live an overall healthy lifestyle, but have fat stored in specific locations that seem to resist natural weight loss efforts.
What to Expect in Your Consultation
In consultation, Dr. Wooten will discuss your fat loss goals, medical history, and drug allergies. Any
previous surgeries must be brought to light to prevent complication. Dr. Wooten will take time to carefully evaluate your overall health and any risk factors that may be particular to your case.
Before recommending a course of treatment, Dr. Wooten may take photographs which may be used to reference areas that will be targeted for fat removal.
Liposuction may be performed as an outpatient procedure at Beleza Plastic Surgery’s Pittsburgh office or surgery center, depending on the amount of liposuction Dr. Wooten recommends. If large amounts of fat must be removed, the procedure will be performed at the hospital, where the patient may be required to stay overnight.
Liposuction may be performed with varying use of anesthesia. Whether anesthesia is “locally” or “generally” applied depends on the amount of fat removal recommended by Dr. Wooten. In cases of drastic fat removal, where general anesthesia is required, the patient will be asleep during the entire surgery.
During the liposuction procedure, Dr. Wooten uses a suction tool attached to a tubular, stainless steel attachment called a “cannula.” Dr. Wooten makes small incisions through which she inserts the cannula into areas of fat deposits. She then begins suctioning the fat out from between the layers of muscle and outer skin. The process is repeated until all targeted fat is safely removed from the body.
Recovering from Liposuction
While you recover, Dr. Wooten may recommend wearing a compression garment overtop areas where fat has been removed. Taking this measure will help to minimize swelling and ensure that the patient’s skin adjusts properly to the new body contour.
Dr. Wooten may also choose to leave temporary surgical drains under the skin, for a short amount of time following surgery. This is sometimes done to prevent excess blood or fluids from accumulating in the wound areas.
Where on the Body can Liposuction be performed?
The most commonly performed areas for this procedure are the abdomen and flanks, as well as the thighs, chin, and neck. This can be a solution for those who wish to shed fat around areas of their bodies that are otherwise resistant to diet and exercise. Liposuction is not an alternative to a healthy lifestyle and should not be treated as such.
Areas that can be shaped by liposuction include:
- Abdomen, waist, and flanks (the “love handles“)
- Cheeks, lower jaw, and neck
- Back (“Back-fat” along the bra-line)
- Upper arms
- Hips, buttocks, and thighs
What about non-surgical 'laser lipo?'
These sorts of treatments are not provided at Beleza Plastic Surgery, as Dr. Wooten performs traditional surgical tumescent liposuction, and feels that this is the method that delivers the best results for patients.
Will the Fat Come Back?
The most encouraging aspect of this cosmetic procedure is that fat cells, once removed from your body, will not be replenished. This means the results will be long-lasting, especially with proper nutrition and exercise to maintain the body’s shape.
Research shows that people who have liposuction are three times more likely to gain weight if they don’t follow a healthy diet after the surgery. But those who follow a healthy diet are twice as likely to lose weight after liposuction. The suctioned fat cells are permanently gone. However, if the patient does not diet and exercise properly, the remaining neighboring fat cells could still enlarge, resulting in irregularities or lumpiness. Consequently, people are much more likely to be happy with their long term results if they make other healthy lifestyle changes. Eventually, lumpiness resulting from gaining weight after surgery can always be revised with another procedure, however, it is clear that the best option is simply to lead a healthy lifestyle so that no revisions are necessary.
